What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and who is it for?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, usually shortened to MLD, is often mentioned alongside massage, but it's a distinct technique with a specific clinical purpose.
Understanding what it actually does helps explain why it's used for such a wide range of reasons, from post-surgical recovery to everyday fluid retention.
As with everything at Level 7, MLD isn't offered as a fixed, one-size-fits-all session.
Treatment starts with an understanding of why you're there, whether that's recovering from a procedure, managing ongoing swelling, or supporting general wellbeing, and the approach is shaped around that.
Because MLD sits within a genuinely clinical framework here rather than being treated as a wellness add-on, sessions are considered and unhurried, with the technique and focus adjusted to what your body needs on the day rather than delivered the same way regardless of the reason you've come in.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
The lymphatic system is part of the body's circulation, responsible for moving fluid, waste, and immune cells through a network of vessels and nodes. Unlike blood, which is pumped by the heart, lymphatic fluid relies on movement and gentle external pressure to keep flowing properly. MLD is a specific, structured technique using light, rhythmic hand movements designed to encourage that fluid to move more effectively, following the direction of the lymphatic system rather than working against it.
This is why MLD looks and feels quite different to a typical massage. The pressure is much lighter, and the movements follow a deliberate pattern rather than working on tension or muscle knots directly.
Who is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for?
MLD is commonly used to support recovery after surgery, where swelling is a normal part of healing but can be significant and uncomfortable. It's also used for general swelling, bloating, and fluid retention that isn't related to surgery, and for anyone whose lymphatic system needs support due to reduced mobility, hormonal changes, or other factors affecting normal fluid movement.
At Level 7, MLD is delivered by Leah, a Band 6 Registered Nurse, which means treatment sits within a genuinely clinical framework rather than being offered as a general wellness massage.
