Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for swelling, bloating and fluid retention
Not all swelling and bloating is related to surgery. Fluid retention can build up for all sorts of everyday reasons, and MLD is one of the more effective, if less well-known, ways to support the body in managing it.
Why fluid retention happens
Fluid retention has a wide range of causes. Hormonal changes, reduced mobility, long periods of travel or sitting, certain medications, and dietary factors can all affect how efficiently the lymphatic system moves fluid through the body. When drainage slows down, fluid builds up in the surrounding tissue, leading to that heavy, swollen, or bloated feeling, most commonly noticed in the legs, ankles, hands, or abdomen.
How MLD helps
MLD's light, rhythmic technique, covered in what MLD actually is, works with the lymphatic system's natural pathways to encourage that built-up fluid to move more efficiently. For everyday fluid retention rather than a post-surgical or medical cause, this can bring genuine relief, reduced puffiness and heaviness, and a feeling of lightness that can last for some time after a session.
When to see a GP first
It's worth being clear about an important distinction. Occasional bloating or mild swelling linked to travel, hormonal changes, or a long day on your feet is a reasonable reason to consider MLD. But persistent, unexplained swelling, swelling in only one limb, or swelling accompanied by pain, redness, or warmth should be checked by a GP before considering MLD, since these can be signs of something that needs medical diagnosis rather than a treatment addressing the symptom alone. MLD supports the lymphatic system, but it isn't a substitute for finding out why swelling is happening in the first place if the cause isn't already clear.
Building it into an ongoing routine
For fluid retention that's more of an ongoing pattern than a one-off, many people find MLD works best as a regular part of their routine rather than an occasional treatment, similar to how it's used for post-surgical recovery, covered in MLD after surgery. How often that should be depends on the individual, which is covered in more detail in how often should you have lymphatic drainage massage?.
