Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) vs regular massage: what's the difference?
MLD often gets grouped in with massage more generally, booked expecting something similar to a relaxing spa treatment or a deep tissue session aimed at muscle tension. It's worth knowing upfront that it's a genuinely different technique, aimed at a different part of the body's systems entirely.
Different technique, different goal
Regular massage, whether relaxation-focused or deep tissue, works primarily on muscle, using varying degrees of pressure to release tension, improve circulation to the muscles, or simply help someone unwind. MLD works on the lymphatic system instead, using light, precise, rhythmic movements that follow the direction lymphatic fluid naturally flows, covered in more detail in what MLD actually is. The pressure is much lighter than most people expect from massage, since pressing too firmly can actually work against the lymphatic system rather than support it.
Different training, different purpose
MLD is a specific clinical technique that requires dedicated training beyond general massage qualifications, which is part of why it's typically delivered by a healthcare professional rather than a massage therapist. At Level 7, MLD is delivered by Leah, a Band 6 Registered Nurse, reflecting the clinical purpose behind the treatment rather than a general wellness offering.
The purpose differs too. Regular massage is generally about comfort, relaxation, or addressing muscular tension. MLD is used for a specific physiological goal, supporting fluid movement, whether that's for post-surgical recovery, covered in MLD after surgery, or everyday fluid retention, covered in MLD for swelling, bloating and fluid retention.
Which one do you actually need?
If your main concern is muscle tension, tightness, or general relaxation, a regular massage is likely the better fit. If your concern is swelling, fluid retention, or post-surgical recovery, MLD is the more appropriate treatment, and a firmer, muscle-focused massage in the same area could actually be counterproductive. The two aren't interchangeable, even though they're often filed under the same general category of "massage" when people are searching for options.
