What to expect in the first 24 hours after microneedling

Microneedling creates a genuine, controlled injury to the skin, so it's normal for skin to look and feel different in the hours afterwards. Knowing what's expected, and what to do about it, makes the first day much less daunting.

What's normal

In the first 24 hours, skin is in a heightened state of activity as it begins its repair process. It's common to notice redness and warmth, similar to mild sun exposure, along with some tightness, dryness, and mild swelling. Skin may also feel more sensitive than usual. All of this is a normal physiological response to the controlled micro-injury the treatment creates, and it typically settles within a day.

What to do during this time

A few simple steps make a real difference to how comfortably skin moves through this period. Avoid touching or picking at the skin, and hold off on makeup for at least 24 hours to give the skin room to begin repairing itself undisturbed. It's also worth avoiding heat exposure, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and intense exercise, since heat can increase inflammation at exactly the point the skin is trying to calm down. The same goes for active skincare ingredients: this isn't the moment for retinol, acids, or exfoliants.

When to be concerned

Redness and sensitivity that lingers well beyond 72 hours, or anything that looks like infection or an unusual reaction, isn't part of the normal response and is worth contacting the clinic about. This is the exception rather than the rule, most clients find the initial reaction settles quickly, but it's worth knowing where the line sits.

Beyond the first day

The first 24 hours are only the start of the skin's recovery. Over the following few days, skin moves into an early repair phase, which can bring some dryness or light flaking as part of its natural renewal cycle. If you're partway through a course of treatment, this cycle repeats with each session, which is part of why spacing sessions correctly, covered in how often to have microneedling, matters as much as the treatment itself.
