Dermaplaning explained: what it is and who it suits
Dermaplaning gets talked about as a beauty trend as often as it's discussed clinically, so it's worth separating what it actually does from what it's marketed as.
What it is
Dermaplaning is a form of advanced exfoliation. A fine blade is used to gently remove the very top layer of dead skin cells along with vellus hair, the fine, soft facial hair sometimes called "peach fuzz." The result is smoother, brighter skin, and better absorption of whatever's applied afterwards, whether that's a mask, serum, or another treatment layered on top.
Who it suits
Dermaplaning suits most skin types and is a good option for anyone looking to improve skin smoothness and brightness without downtime. Because it works on the skin's surface rather than triggering the deeper repair response that microneedling does, it's a gentler treatment with a much shorter, if any, recovery period, which makes it approachable for people who want visible results without the redness and sensitivity that comes with more intensive treatments.
As a standalone facial or as an add-on
At Level 7, dermaplaning is available in two ways. As the Clinical Dermaplane Facial, it's a treatment in its own right, an advanced exfoliation session with a tailored mask included to support skin condition and enhance results. It's also available as an add-on to other treatments, most commonly ahead of microneedling or as part of a Hydro Skin Therapy session, where removing dead skin and surface hair first allows the following treatment to be more effective.
How it compares to other exfoliation
Dermaplaning is mechanical rather than chemical, so it doesn't rely on acids or enzymes to lift dead skin. That makes it a useful option for people whose skin doesn't tolerate chemical exfoliants well, or who want the benefits of exfoliation alongside removal of vellus hair, which chemical exfoliation doesn't address. It's not a replacement for a clinical facial built around barrier repair or hydration, more a complementary step that can be added to those treatments or used on its own between them.
If you're weighing up dermaplaning against a fuller facial treatment, clinical facials vs high-street facials covers how Level 7's facial treatments are built, and where dermaplaning fits alongside them.
